The Mazda MX30 is a five-door, five-seat SUV/Crossover which happens to also be an EV. This plug-in crossover with retro ‘freestyle’ door design mimics the RX-8 Coupe from the mid-2ooos.
Mazda is working contrary to many car manufacturers in their EV choices - namely, that they aren’t punching for massive range. You’re looking at 124 miles on the WLTP cycle. Mazda has made this choice because their research illustrates that customers aren’t looking for more distance on a full charge.
Plus, smaller batteries have a significantly greener CO2 emissions footprint. Battery manufacture creates high emissions, and these smaller batteries allow their zero tailpipe emissions to counteract the emissions created by manufacture sooner.
Rivalling the Honda-e, the MX30 has a family-friendly five seats, and is kitted out in vegan-friendly seat materials, recycled PET plastic bottles and actual cork trim, all adding to its eco-friendly credentials.
As an EV, it drives confidently and neatly, cornering with ease, and as usual, with all EVs, it’s that get-up-and-go in the 0-40mph range that keeps this a city-happy drive, with that immediate burst of energy from standing.
The smart brake regenerator is also more intuitive than many EVs offer, and with five levels to choose from you can in reality be driving with one pedal for all but coming to a complete stop. In terms of boot capacity, the MX30 competes with the Ford Focus, offering a capacity of 366 litres.
